Ever wondered what it would be like to be able to step inside a pencil sketch and walk around in it? An artist has created an idea of what that might feel like using free 3D modelling software.
The artist began with a 2D sketch and turned it into a 3D scene using Blender. The result feels like exploring a dream, if the dream were a collage of pencil on paper sketches (for more inspiration, see our collection of Blender tutorials and see what’s new in Blender 5.2 LTS).

The artist Leteramma says they’re relatively new to 2D drawing and have been learning from videos online (also see our own roundup of how to draw tutorials). For the piece above, they drew a series of pencil sketches and then scanned the drawings to be able to bring them into Blender.

Once in the software, they tweaked the shader settings so the white paper turned into a white emission, and Then they cut out the images and plugged them into a geometry node setup. “Essentially, it just rotates the drawings so they always face the camera,” they write on Reddit. “The background also has a white glow, so the cut-out elements blend in seamlessly”.
As well as this pencil sketch aesthetic, the artist has been experimenting with other styles and atmospheres. For pieces like those below, they use Optix denoising to create an unsettling scene giving Backrooms liminal space-like vibes.
